Y’all…I live in Texas, so I have a lot of feelings about shorts.
I wear shorts for at least eight months of the year. They match our hot weather, and shorts are, for me, the best lifestyle option. Between morning walks and adventures with my son, I reach for shorts almost daily between April and November.
In the scheme of “fruit-shaped bodies,” I’m an apple. It took me a long time to come to terms with this truth. My mother is an apple. My sister is an apple. We are apples. What this means is that we tend to carry our weight in our abdomen. For me in practical terms, it means that when it comes to the way clothing fits, I need to pay close attention to the waist measurements. My waist can make the difference between choosing a small versus a medium or a 6 versus an 8.
But perhaps more importantly than the size is how forgiving the waist is. Does it have stretch? Does it have a wide waist band? The clothes I enjoy the most are structured with a waist that doesn’t dig into me.
Enter my search for new shorts. I gained about 20 pounds from my pandemic lifestyle, so I’ve purchased at least six pairs of shorts since 2020, searching for comfort and style. Two of those pairs are these soft shorts from Vuori.
I’m keeping it real with this photos…it’s cloudy here today, so I tried to find the best light and the least amount of clutter.
These are the Vuori Halo Performance Shorts. I first found them at REI. They seemed kinda pricey, but I really needed some new shorts that I could wear comfortably at the park with my kid. I’ve since gotten hundreds of wears out of them, mostly for exercise. More recently, I bought that pair of goldenrod yellow shorts above—a beautiful rich color for fall—and I’m thinking of them as my “fashion” pair. I bought them with Saturdays in mind—afternoons at the movies, evenings reading in bed or cleaning the kitchen. Before buying such a bold color, I tried to consider if I had tops that I’d want to wear with them, and the color that comes to mind is white: white tops, yellow shorts, brown sandals. It sounds like summer, but it’s fall in Texas.
These shorts have been designed with quality in mind. The fabric is a lush, soft tech fabric (89% recycled polyester, 11% elastane according to Vuori). The waistband is wide and elasticized. There is a zippered pocket on the right hip, and there’s no interior liner. They wash beautifully and hold up well.
I’m really happy I can tell you about these shorts after owning my first pair for over a year. As a consumer, I’m always interested in the longevity of a garment. When I was younger, I was obsessed with the idea of cost per wear. Now that I’ve lived a few decades of adulthood, I think my shopping habits are informed by that idea without much conscious consideration.
At about $70 a pair with tax, these shorts are an investment piece for me. I feel good having two pairs; I don’t see myself buying a third pair any time soon. Vuori is definitely a brand that “gets” me. I’m glad I have a beauty budget so every once in a while, I can buy a great piece from them.

Notes: The selection in stores may offer more colors than what the website shows. I did not see the goldenrod yellow shorts on the website, but I did find them in Tyler’s. I also love this rich, rusty red color, which I have seen in store but not in my size. Such a pretty color for fall!
