A candle for the liminal season as summer fades
I’m usually not much of a secret-keeper, at least when it comes to things I love and want to share. I’m a populist and I think there is more than enough happiness to go around. But I’m a little bit afraid of recommending this candle because I’m worried it’s selling out and will disappear from stores soon!
Oh, well. I will take my chances because this one is great and you ought to know about a little ten-dollar jar of scented joy.
This Wooded Sage candle from Target might be lurking in the back of the candle shelves. Maybe there’s just one left as you are browsing candles; you’re already loaded up with three of the beautiful artsy pumpkin-shaped jarred candles (I’m definitely gonna pick one of these up sooner or later!). You find Wooded Sage and take a sniff. Inside the jar, it smells a little like ginger or sassafras, the plant originally used to make old-timey root beer. It’s intriguing. You take it home.
At home, you light your Wooded Sage candle, and over time, the room fills with an intoxicating blend of scent. There’s cut grass, something musky, vanilla, ginger, black pepper, and something green and herbal. Maybe it’s the sassafras again? In any case, it blows your mind, and you make a note to yourself to get another one before they sell out.
What I really love about this candle is the blend of summer notes (grass and herbs) with fall spices like ginger. Vanilla gives it a little sweetness. It’s sophisticated, maybe a little nostalgic as summer winds down and the kids are all hustling to get to school on time. As I’ve gotten older and the milestones of my life have given way to my kid’s milestones, I appreciate the changing of the seasons more than ever. It’s not just that summer is unpleasant here; it’s the reminder that everything is temporary, whether it’s pain or pleasure.
