A day late, a dollar short: welcome back to Ordinary Beauty!
My goal is to post something new here every Monday, but my kid has been sick for the past five days. It’s been all hands on deck to nurse him back to health. I like to say that parenthood is the experience of the full spectrum of human emotions, and I think having a sick child is an amplified version of that. I’ve been terribly worried about my son…and I’ve been soaking up all the cuddles with him. Paul and I have been overwhelmed by Sammy’s needs…and I’ve enjoyed having a somewhat stripped down schedule and extra time to play Mario Kart together. Comforting my child has been the easy part of this illness. Everything else has been full of anxiety and fear.
But today Sammy headed back to school, and we are back to business! Let’s talk about hair.
I do not invest a lot of time or money in my hair. My hair is in great shape. My scalp, on the other hand, has been recovering from what I think is postpartum psoriasis. I’ve dealt with an itchy, flaky scalp for a long time, but it’s gotten much better. Now that I am 4+ years from pregnancy and no longer nursing, the only time I really experience itchy scalp is about 12 hours after I wash my hair. (That might seem weirdly precise, but it’s what I have observed.)
My hair cycle is such that I like to cut it really short (chin-length or shorter) about once a year, then I let it grow out. When it’s in its “long” phase, I wear it up all the time. My favorite way to wear it up is either a bun or secured in a claw clip with my favorite Soulvation headband.
Hey, it’s me! I’m wearing the twist headband in Copper, my favorite shade.
These twist headbands are stretchy and comfortable, but here is the key: you need to wear your headband frequently to really break it in. Wearing and washing it is the best way to stretch the fabric to a perfect fit on your head. I love these headbands for their fit and for the outrageously pretty range of colors available. Copper is my favorite shade; I bought it in this three-pack, which Soulvation still has available.
I find that wearing a headband helps cut down on the urge to scratch when my scalp is feeling itchy. Wearing my hair totally loose feels like an invitation to scratch. Less scratching means less flaking, which means I don’t feel quite as self-conscious about my hair. In the end, I think that is part of the goal of self-care: to allow us to feel confident and comfortable enough to forget about our appearance as we dig into the work of the day.
Product Details: Twist Headbands
Soulvation
My size: Sizing is one size fits all.
Price: $19 each. Headbands may also be purchased in sets, such as the Dusk Twist Pack for $44.
Fit: The headbands are a little tighter and slippier when new. As a headband is worn and washed, the fabric will stretch a little bit and conform better to the shape of the head.
