My amazing mother-in-law introduced me to this lovely hand cream a few years ago. I found a little mini tube in my Christmas stocking, and ever since, I’ve refused to be without it. It’s just the best.
Winters here in Texas are generally pretty mild…except when they aren’t. Even if you don’t live here, you might remember back in 2021, when our electrical grid failed during an unusually cold and wet bout of weather. My little family was among the luckiest of Texans. For some reason, we never lost power for more than an hour at a time. We never lost water. Several friends stayed with us, and we had neighbors popping over for hot coffee and hot baths for their kids. In hindsight, it sounds cozy, even lovely, to have people we know and love keeping us company during a very surreal time. But I was a ball of anxiety, wondering if and when we would lose power. And as an introvert, it was hard on me to have unexpected guests staying with us for an unspecified amount of time.
That was 2021. That was intense. It’s not uncommon, though, for us to have a few weeks of truly wintry weather. And what I’ve learned is that I’m like a tropical plant who quickly dries up and cracks in cold weather. Our usual heat and humidity suits me well; my skin loves it. But in cold, dry, wintry weather, this Gold Bond cream is an absolute gift. It’s thick and creamy, with a soft floral scent that reminds me of an Avon fragrance my mom used to wear long ago called Soft Musk. (Anyone else remember Soft Musk? I think that’s what it was called.) It does stay a little emollient, even greasy, on the skin for a few minutes after application, but that’s why I like to save it for nighttime. It really does hydrate and heal dry, cracked skin.
I love putting on hand cream at night because it is the very last thing I do as part of my self-care routine. It signals the end of the day. I’ve been layering Gold Bond with this Vanilla Bean Noel lotion from Bath & Body Works. Maybe it’s basic, but I love its buttery vanilla scent. It’s a lighter formula than the Gold Bond and absorbs a little more quickly into the skin. (Vanilla Bean Noel is also probably a seasonal scent, so maybe consider it a recommendation for next December. I will also be hunting for Vetiver & Vanilla, a scent I sampled in store, loved, and didn’t purchase. By the time I went back to find it again, it was gone…like it had never existed at all.)
Can we take a moment to admire this beautiful nightstand? It’s actually a cart, and Paul made it for me! He was able to incorporate this cool laser-cut wood, which he found at the ATX Hackerspace (which is now Asmbly Makerspace) as scrap from someone else’s project.
The cart is one of my favorite gifts ever. Along with the Gold Bond cream.
